Ian Halperin Chat at James Taylor Online
4 October 1999
Joel - Welcome to our live chat with James Taylor biographer Ian Halperin, everyone.
Joel - And thank you, Ian, for coming to talk to us.
Joel - Ian Halperin is the author of an upcoming biographer called "Fire And Rain: The James Taylor Story. It's due out in November, right Ian?
Ian - Pleasure Joel, thanks for inviting me
Joel - Biography, that is. Ian's the biographer. ;)
Ian - As far as I know
Joel - Could you tell us a little about yourself and your background, Ian?
Ian - Sure, but before I do it's important to acknowledge that there's two biographers in the house Joel, because your book is due out next year and we're all eagerly awaiting it.
Joel - Thanks, Ian.
Ian - I'm from Montreal, Canada. I'm a previous winner of the Rolling Stone Magazine Award for investigative journalism and I've written four books. I'm 35.
Joel - I know you've written on a variety of subjects both music-related and otherwise. What led you to do a book on JT?
Ian - I would also like to say for the record that I've visited several music sites online and your JT site is the best. I'm sure everybody would agree with me that you do an impeccable job. Keep up the great work.
Ian - I was never really a JT fan. I've been more involved in alternative music and jazz. I was approached by a New York publisher to do a book about JT and at first I was skeptical.
Joel - What changed your mind?
Ian - After doing some research and inquiries to several friends I have in the music industry I decided that JT's story is one of the most fascinating and intriguing stories in music history. I could not believe what this music icon had gone through to get to the top.
Joel - It sounds like you spoke to a huge number of folks as part of your research. How many were theren in total, and what kinds of folks were they?
Ian - I spoke to over one hundred people connected to JT, including band members, managers, fans, family and friends he grew up with.
Joel - Did any have negative things to say about JT, or were they generally positive?
Ian - Before we go on, I've got to say that I was very surprised that there had never before been a bio about JT. This man is a living music legend who deserves to be referred to in the same breath as Chuck Berry, Paul McCartney, John Lennon and Bob Dylan. I hope everybody who reads Fire and Rain will pick up a copy of Joel's book. It's good for everybody that two books are coming out. It gives his fans two different perspectives. They have waited too long for a book about JT.
Ian - Generally positive, but like most people on the planet earth JT does have a few skeletons in his closet.
Ian - Joel I gotta go pee. Can you wait two minutes? Thanks for your patience.
Joel - Were any of them revelations other than his drug abuse and widely reported failed marriages?
Joel smiles. No problem.
Joel - In the meantime, folks, if you'd like to see a little more about the book, click on the link at the top of the chat.
Joel - The book will ship sometime in November, but Amazon is taking orders for it now. You can have it delivered right when it's released.
Joel - Also, for new arrivals: This part of the chat is moderated, so you'll only be able to watch. Later we'll open it up and you'll be able to ask your own questions of Ian
Ian - I'm baaaack!! Thanks everybody for waiting. Some family members complained that he wasn't around all the time. Some fellow musicians complained that some people in JT's camp weren't always the friendliest people to work with. But nobody I interviewed really had a bad word to say about the man himself.
Joel - I've been asked often if JT himself had any involvement in your book.
Ian - No, it's an unauthorized bio.
Joel - Can you give us the names of some of the folks who did talk to you for the book?
Ian - Joel, I've got to add that one of the reasons I wasn't enthusiastic at first about doing this book is because I'm also a professional musician - saxophone. Before I did this book I really wasn't into the man's music. But now I'm a fan. In fact, I've listened over and over to his music and have discovered a lot of beauty in his melodies, lyrics and harmonies.
Joel - What fact about JT surprised you most when you were conducting your research?
Ian - At this point I don't want to reveal the names of the people who cooperated until the book's published. But I'll give you a few clues - I interviewed two of the people closest to JT who are also musicians as well as at least two recent band members.
Ian - the thing that surprised me most was the early part of his life, growing up in as the son of an affluent medical dean and winding up in a mental hospital. I couldn't believe what JT went through in his mid-late teens.
Joel - Knowing all that, what sort of impression do you have of JT today?
Ian - JT is one of the classiest, most professional acts in showbiz today. The man is an insatiable workaholic. He continues to provide joy to millions of people around the world day in and day out. A lot of people who are famous can learn a lot from him. He knows how to handle himself in public and never jumps queues in supermarkets or restaurants because of his fame. He's just a regular guy trying to make music because that's what he loves doing.
Joel - I know everyone else is anxious to ask their own questions, so in a minute we'll open it up.
Joel - Did you want to mention your other book that's been released recently, Ian?
Ian - Before we go on Joel I must thank you for posting the book on your website. I was in Europe on another assignment when I found out. I was extremely touched. I hope your book becomes a bestseller. You deserve it. You are the ultimate JT afficianado.
Ian - Sure, it's called Shut Up And Smile, Supermodels: The Dark Side. Before you open up the chat I'll say a few words about this title.
Joel - I appreciate it, ian.
Ian - I went undercover as a model in L.A. and New York and discovered a world in which beauty is everything and tragedy is everywhere. Lots of drug, alcohol and sexual abuse. Models I worked with shot up heroin under their toenails and tongues to hide track marks before photo shoots. So far the reviews have been good. Anybody who is online tonight is entitled to buying a personalised autographed copy from the publisher of a special limited edition version.
Joel - Okay. While you're giving them the address I'll get ready to open up the floodgates. Just a minute, everyone.
Ian - The cost of the book is $19.95 plus two beans for shipping and handling. Just send a check to: Ogo Books, 6230 Wilshire bldv., PMB1500, L.A., California 90048-5104
Ian - typo, that's Wilshire Blvd.
Joel - Thanks, Ian. Sounds like an interesting book.
Joel - We appreciate your coming to talk with us. And now, I'll open it up.
Ian - great

ms thang - Ian, do you play the sax solo or with a band
Mona - Ian, I'm happy that someone finally wrote a book about JT and his really special music..thanks
Ian - The Rolling Stone award was for an expose about a medical doctor. I'm also the author of a book about the late grunge icon Kurt Cobain.
steam - IAN..we hear alot about JT's Dad and siblings..What about his mother?
jojo - looking forward to reading both of your books ian and joe
Ian - I play with a band, I have two cd's out. I've toured Europe and North America at festivals, clubs etc...
Dustin - Ian are you pretty good friends with Kenny G.
ANGEL - Ian....you are a delight to read......i'm convinced i have to have this JT book now!!
Ian - hey jojo, real Joel's. I'm the first to admit that nobody does more to promote JT than Joel. Joel's a real "Troubadour".
ms thang - how can we order your cd's and learn more about you too
karin - as i asked much earlier, do you feel that your coverage of carly simon is fair and accurate?
jojo - ian i know that!!!
Ian - Hi Karin, I put a lot of effort into the Carly chapters. I think some of the most startling info in the book comes up here.
LadyAron - Ian.....Is this your first biography and if so, would you do another one?
ANGEL - Joel is a pretty amazing guy....his book will be on all our lists too!!! :-)
ms thang - Yes, I agree about Joel website. Everytime I get an update It puts me in a good mood
jojo - you know it angel!!!
Dustin - HAVE YOU HAD A CHANCE TO TALK TO JAMES PERSONALLY OR SEE HIM PERFORM SINCE YOU FINISHED THE BOOK.
jojo - me too miss thang
Ian - I'm a bit burned out now Lady Aron. I've written quite a lot the past three years. It's time to put my sax on my shoulder and to get back out on the road doing what I love doing most.
ANGEL - I assume that JT has read the book...hasn't he? was he pleased?
LadyAron - That sounds like a good plan, Ian!! Good luck with that!!!
jojo - thanks to bith ian and joel for taking this time to talk with us!

Ian - Hi Dustin, I haven't talked to the man personally. I've seen countless videos of him and saw him perform impromptu, which I describe in the book.
ms thang - Ian, JT still always looks sad behind the eyes. Is he?
Kirstin - I'm wondering the same thing Iain. Has he read or acknowledged your work on his life story? What ere his comments, if any.

Ian - I have a quote to dedicate to Joel by the great Bertrand Rusell. "htred of enemies is easier and more intense than love of reinds. But from men who are more anxious to inure opponents than to benefit the world at large no great good it to be expected." Thanks for everything Joel. You're an inspiration to all.
ANGEL - what is the name of your band, Ian? and where do play, mostly? you did say jazz, right? i love jazz!
sharon - why is the text jammed?
ozarks - Ian, can hardly wait 'til the book comes
ozarks - Comes out,that is!
jojo - i dont see it as sadness, to me he just looks intense ms thang
ozarks - Will you do any book signings?
Dustin - Where are you going to be when the book comes out. Are you going to be autographing anywhere????
ms thang - Well, either way I can ease the tension...
Ian - My music's been compared to a Leonard Cohen meets Coleman Hawkins style. Very poetic, lots of sax and percussion - what else would you expect from a Montreal jew?
ANGEL - great quote..Ian...and truly great spirit...you and Joel, both!!!
ANGEL - lol@Ian...so where will you play?

dolly - I think soulful is the right word for him.
steam - IAN...being from Montreal, i'm guessing you might be a Jesse Winchester fan
NICE - Did you have any support from JT on the tome?
steam - comparison between Jesse and JT?
Ian - The point of the book is not to do autograph sessions and book signings. I get off on that on some of my other books. But this one is for the fans. It's long overdue. That's why you deserve two books. And believe me, Joel's will top mine. He's the man. Risberg rules!!!!
jojo - thanks again joel!!! and you too ian goodnight all jts music has touched my heart years ago and still does to this day its nice to share that with others
LadyAron - I hate to leave, but I must.......Good Luck with your book and your music, Ian!! My copy of "Fire And Rain" will surely be read more than once!! Thanks to you, Joel for bringing us another great JTO event!! Goodnight!!

Joel - Mine is still in the early stages, sharon. There's not much to tell yet.
ARod - Hey Ian, I met you at Ryerson University last year for the Kurt Cobain presentation. (By the way, any Cobain fans should buy the book, "Who Killed Kurt Cobain")I wanted to know, do you see any similarities in the way both Kurt and James attempted to deal with their bouts of depression?.

Dustin - So how about that favorite song?
Ian - JT can relate to Kurt, as he eloquently expressed shortly after Kurt died.
sharon - Ian, is there a rivalry between joni and carly?
Ian - Let's just say that Joni and Carly were never the best of friends.

sharon - Does joni blame carly for her breakup with james?
Ian - there are maybe one or two songs in the history of pop music that comes remotely close to "Fire and Rain". I can listen to the song all day. It's a masterpiece. In two hundred years people will still be listening to it.

Ian - Taylor's not in music for self aggrandizment. He's in it to make music and to jam. He doesn't care if his face is on the cover of Rolling Stone or in People magazine. But to be successful in this business you need to have strong people involved in your career. And JT has always had that, Peter Asher, Borman etc...

Dustin - no puedo a hablar en francessa pero espanol no es un problema

Ian - Carole King is mentioned prominently, as she should be.
Kirstin - And what about The Vineyard?
Ian - JT loves playing in Brazil. He really appreciates the Latin people and he loves letting his hair down (what's left of it) there.
sharon - Tapestry is a masterpiece!
ARod - Ian, if you could describe the typical JT fan, how would you do it?
Ian - JT fans are intelligent and they know what good music is. They aren't caught up in a lot of the bull that is put out today by record label honchos.
Ian - Somebody's ringing my bell, I'll be back in a flash...thanks
sharon - Ian, do joni and JT have a good friendship these days?

SuperD - Omaha, sorry
ARod - Ian, thanks for being here (Thanks to Joel as well). A presentation at Ryerson on James (similar to the one you gave on Kurt) would be much appreciated. G'night everybody!
Ian - thanks MS. For the record, I've never been into sales. I'm an arist. I live day-to-day, appreciate each day I'm alive. Everyday I wake up I'm amazed. Amid visions of light, a long October night, hipster pants and magical mystery prints that danced, oh my, oh my, ...that's from one of my songs.
sharon - Sorry, I think my question got lost, are jt and carly on friendly terms now?
ANGEL - ohhhhhhhhh, Ian!!! you truly are amazing! you wrote that? back to music...for all our sakes!!!!

Ian - I'd ask JT to tell me why did it end with Joni when they seemed so in love.
ms thang - ian, did you interview Brian Reed?
Dustin - that's right, i was thinking of bob taylor
Zot - Jimmy Olsen worked at the Daily Planet. :)

Joel - You're a lot of help, Zotty.

sharon - Ian, is there anything in the book about JT's latest love in the book, he mentioned her during his chat with Charles Osgood

Ian - Jt always writes great songs. Unfortunately, the music business has changed for the worse and it's not easy to promote songs today. The market is over saturated and people want gloss and hype like Ricky Martin or the Backstreet Boys instead of quality like JT, Bob Dylan or Cat Stevens.

sharon - Ian, intense because of drug use?
RT - IAN, in Hourglass interviews, JT mentions Another Day as being a song that talks about emerging from a dark period in his life, does the book deal much with this transition period described by the song ,"walk with me into this light...?"
Ian - two bucks extra for postage and handling. Plus a cup of coffee for Joel, the man never sleeps. He's a workaholic.

Joel smirks at Ian. Sales will plummet.

babs - Ian-I suppose you don't care to know that i yodel?
ANGEL - that is what i heard too, ms..
Ian - Fire and Rain is a sympathetic portrayal of America's number one troubadour, James Vernon Taylor.
babs - That's his dad?
Ian - Check out Esmond Choueke on Amazon.com for his book about Aphrodesiacs.
ms thang - The first was a friend of his whose parents thought he wasn't good enough for her and sent her off to school. They kept in touch over the phone and made plans to meet. On her flight home the plane crashes. Thus, hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things to come. Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground.
