James,
I was watching a live performance of “Carolina In My Mind” and was watching your right hand.
It looks like you are using a hybrid sort of clawhammer strumming pattern when you play.
Are you aware you are doing this or is it something that comes natural to you? I recognize the picking pattern because I’ve tried to play clawhammer style picking on guitar. There are some pickers that are very good at this but I can’t seem to get the feel for it.
The way you use your thumb and fingers looks so natural and syncopated. Maybe I need to look at more of your videos so I can learn clawhammer from you! (you’re banjo playing on “Old Man” sounded more like Travis picking to me)
Thank You for so many good tunes and for being a real person,
David Burns
