I’ve been retained to auction the home in Chapel Hill, NC where James Taylor grew up – 618 Morgan Creek Rd. JT’s parents designed and built the home in 1952. They sold it in 1974 to the Johnston family who are my clients for the sale. Bids for the auction are due at 3 pm on June 28th. The tax value of the entire property is right around $1.5 million and this reflects the high cost of land in Chapel Hill.
The home is a modernist design and sits on 24+ acres that are undisturbed and just as they were when JT carved his initials in a tree near the house. Wisely, his parents built a separate 2-bedroom cottage/studio adjacent to the main house so the teenager’s music-making wouldn’t disturb the parents. More information will be available soon but just thought fans would want to know this info. It would be a perfect setting for a JT Museum.
James Taylor’s childhood in Chapel Hill, NC is open to the public for the first time in 40 years. The tour is on June 4th from 10 am to 2:30 pm. Tickets are available from the NC Modernist Houses organization and are $7/each.
