Summer JT Update
According to recent articles, JT and fiancee Caroline “Kim” Smedvig are moving into a house in Lenox, Massachusetts for the summer while he takes time off from touring to write and record a new album. Afterwards, they plan to move back to JT’s place on Martha’s Vineyard. No details are known about the album so far, though some studio recording has apparently already been completed.

“VH1 Storytellers” is a new CD of performances from VH1’s “Storytellers” series and is now shipping from Amazon.com. The CD, which benefits the City of Hope charity, includes JT’s live performance of “Mexico” plus tracks from David Bowie, Jewel, Sheryl Crow, and Elvis Costello. Another Platinum Album For JT
JT’s 1981 album, “Dad Loves His Work”, was his latest to be certified Platinum (1 million copies sold) in March. “Sweet Baby James,” “Mud Slide Slim And the Blue Horizon,” “Greatest Hits,” “JT,” “Flag, “That’s Why I’m Here” “Never Die Young,” “New Moon Shine,” “Live,” and “Hourglass” have also reached Platinum status, while 1976’s “Greatest Hits” is one of the fewer than 100 albums that have reached Diamond status with more than 10 million copies sold. Sony Legacy’s five remastered and repackaged JT albums are now shipping. Hall of Fame Report
JT was formally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Monday night by Paul McCartney, who played a significant role in JT’s solo debut for Apple Records back in 1968. JT was the last inductee of the evening and didn’t take the stage until more than four hours into the ceremony. He played “Mexico” and “Fire And Rain,” then the show ended with a jam session by Natalie Cole and all the inductees performing Nat King Cole’s hit, “Route 66.” VH1 will air a 2-hour edited version of the ceremony Wednesday night at 9 p.m. Eastern. The upcoming unauthorized JT biography, “Fire and Rain: The James Taylor Story,” is being moved from the original publisher to St. Martin’s Press with a revised publication date of Fall 2000. Unfortunately, in spite of efforts by the new publisher to assure a smooth transition for existing advance orders, Amazon.com has pulled the original publisher’s listing for the book and cancelled the advance orders. 10,000 Members, And We Have A Winner
Our free JT Digest mailing list membership topped 10,000 Monday night, and we can now announce the results of our contest in honor of the milestone. Our winner — picked at random from all current mailing list members — is Jennifer C. of Norwich, Connecticut. “I first became a JT fan years ago in high school,” says Jennifer. “I remember my mom’s face the day I came home and told her that I loved JT. SNL Re-Runs
Cable channel Comedy Central will air an old “Saturday Night Live” starring JT on Saturday, January 8 at 8 p.m. Eastern and January 12 at 6 p.m. The episode originally aired in 1988 with host Robin Williams and JT performing “Never Die Young,” “Sweet Potato Pie,” and “That Lonesome Road.” Also, on Sunday, January 9 at noon Eastern look for another episode that originally aired in November 1993. Rosie O’Donnell hosts and JT performs “Memphis” (written by Chuck Berry, 1959), “Slap Leather, and “Secret ‘O Life.” He also plays himself in a skit satirizing the Frank Sinatra duet compilation that had recently been released.
