New Liv Album

Greg Benson’s “Isn’t It Nice To Be Home Again” reports that Livingston Taylor will release a new “early years” collection of songs on a CD titled “Carolina Day: The Livingston Taylor Collection (1970-1980).” The disc includes JT and Carly backing up on “Loving Be My New Horizon.” Release date is January 20 on Razor & Tie records.

A JT Christmas

I get a lot of mail asking why JT hasn’t recorded a Christmas album. I don’t have an answer, but in the meantime I’d suggest looking up two Christmas-themed songs JT has done: “New Star Shining” with Ricky Skaggs and “Home By Another Way” on “Never Die Young.” Both albums are available on the SHOP page if you’re interested.

On Tuesday night’s Letterman appearance JT performed “Line ‘Em Up” with daughter Sally (now 23) featured prominently on backup. He’s also sporting a new close-cropped haircut, by the way.

James Taylor Online Personals(?)

I thought it would be fun to set up a personals site for JT fans. Using the One and Only personals site, you can specify that you’re a JT fan or search for other JT fans who’ve submitted ads. It’s free to place an ad, so you have nothing to lose. And be sure to let us know if you find love through JT Online.

18 October 97

Ben Taylor Online

It was finally time to give the younger Taylor a page of his own. It’s a bit sparse at the moment, but I’m sure that will change soon. Visit Ben Taylor Online and be sure to let us know if you have anything to contribute.

MOJO Article

I’ve put the main part of the recent MOJO article on the TEXT page. Don’t miss this great, in-depth story.

Carly (and Ben)

Carly Simon will appear on “The Late Show with David Letterman” (CBS) October 15th and “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” on October 17th. Ben Taylor-watchers note that he’s been appearing lately as a backup singer for his mom.

2 October 97

All Chat, All the Time

Maybe not all the time, but the new chat system has proven popular enough to schedule chats more often. The new schedule is weekdays at 9 p.m. Eastern / 6 p.m. Pacific and weekends at 3 Eastern / Noon Pacific. Remember, the new chat no longer uses Java or anything fancy, so everyone should be able to join in easily. See you there.

1 October 97

MOJO

I keep forgetting to post this — hope it’s not too late. The September issue of British music magazine MOJO has a wonderful, lengthy article about JT, his family, his troubled past, his loves, and his albums. It’s the best article I’ve read about JT in a long time and is full of great photos. The magazine is easy to find even in the U.S. at any larger newsstand (Radiohead is on the cover). I hope to have the text of the article and maybe some photos on the site soon.

JT Comes Through

JT did finally show up on “Good Morning America” Tuesday morning, though it was a taped interview and performance (JT was in Italy at the time). He did a short interview and performed “Line ‘Em Up” and part of “Never Die Young” before the show ended.

Tour Rumors

A ’98 European tour is rumored and a symphonic tour is all but assured. The western U.S. will definitely be included this time. No dates are announced, so please don’t write asking for more details. They’ll be posted here as soon as they’re available.

29 September 97

Third Time’s the Charm?

Would you believe JT might appear on tomorrow’s (Tuesday the 30th) “Good Morning America? I have my doubts, too, but that’s the word according to some who say it was announced on GMA today.

Chat Tonight

Don’t forget tonight’s inaugural CHAT with the new software. Everyone should be able to join in using any browser or computer, so come by at 10 p.m. Eastern / 7 p.m. Pacific and join the fray.

28 September 97

New Chat

I’ve replaced the old Java chat system with a new one that doesn’t need Java at all. It should work with any browser, so if you have trouble using it for any reason, please let me know. Go ahead and CHAT now and be sure to come by every Monday night at 10 p.m. Eastern / 7 p.m. Pacific for our weekly scheduled chat.

JT’s Italy Plans

JT’s apparently spending a few days in Italy (Milan and Rome) to record at least two TV shows. One, “Domenica in,” was already taped in Rome and another “MTV unplugged-style” two-hour show will be taped later. Thanks to Roberto Romano for the tip.

27 September 97

Crying Wolf

JT didn’t appear on Friday’s “Good Morning America” in spite of all the sources saying he would. I don’t know if he cancelled at the last minute or if something else happened, but I’ll post here if I hear anything.

For all of you who’ve had trouble finding JT’s sheet music and guitar/piano song books: The publisher now sells them all online. See the SHOP page near the bottom.

Italy

JT is reported to be doing some kind of performance in Milan, Italy on Monday the 29th. I don’t have any details about where or when, though. Thanks to Giorgia Gurioli for the tip.

New Poll

Visitors to the Forum and Chat pages are often curious about how old their fellow JT junkies are, so I thought I’d make a full-fledged poll out of it. Of course it’s completely voluntary, but if you do vote, no fudging. See the POLLS page to pull the lever and see the current results.

24 September 97

Here’s hoping I’m not crying wolf again since JT didn’t appear on Tuesday’s “Good Morning America” as I’d announced: According to JT’s manager, he’ll appear on Friday’s episode. Sorry about all the confusion.

See the FAQ for details about the concert and recording.

I’ve confirmed that JT will appear on ABC’s “Good Morning America” tomorrow, Tuesday the 23rd.

Time Article Request

Though I have the famous 1971 Time cover story on paper, I don’t have OCR software to get the text online. If anyone who has the story would like to volunteer to type it in or OCR the text, please e-mail me first so there’s no duplication of effort, then I’ll give you the go-ahead. Thanks.

14 September 97

JT On Conan Confirmed

I’ve confirmed that JT will appear on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” (NBC) this Tuesday night (September 16). Other guests are Kirk Douglas and Gabrielle Reece. It airs at 12:35 here in L.A., but check your local listings.

The Summer Tour is officially over. No more dates are scheduled for the future (not internationally, either), but watch this site for updates as soon as they’re available. For now I don’t expect any new dates before ’98.

12 September 97

The Gallery Expands

I’ve added scads of new pictures to the GALLERY page thanks to quite a few submissions by readers in recent months. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

3 September 97

The Opposition

I was curious what JT’s fans would think of this scathing feature story from Miami’s New Times newspaper. Is the author right or wrong? Post your comments to the JT Online FORUM. Note: The link was broken until Thursday morning, but it should work now. Sorry.

2 September 97

New York Shows

For those who’ve written to ask why tickets for all the New York shows aren’t available for sale: The final, September 14 show at Madison Square Garden (and the last show of the Summer tour) is a “Listener Appreciation Concert” for local radio station WPLJ (95.5). They’re giving out lots of tickets over the air, but as far as I know there’s no other way to get tickets. If you’re in the New York area, listen for an announcement then call 1-800-321-WPLJ. And for those who might be wondering, the station doesn’t appear to broadcast via the Web like some others, so you’ll probably have to be in their listening area to have a chance at tickets. Thanks to Betsy Lewis for the update.

26 August 97

21 July 97

“Morning Becomes Eclectic”

Los Angeles radio station KCRW has put a 1994 live JT performance and interview online in its 43-minute entirety. It’s JT as many of us like him best — low on accompaniment with just the guitar and Don Grolnick’s piano and accordion. If you’re willing to suffer through some very poorly-conducted interviewing you’ll be treated to some great mostly-acoustic JT. The show is in RealAudio format, so visit the RealAudio site to download the player if you don’t have it already. There are two versions, with one for 28.8K connections and another higher-quality one for 56K or better. Also, “Secret O’ Life” from this performance is included on a CD compilation of the “Morning Becomes Eclectic” shows over the years. Thanks to John Kinzelberg for the tip.

18 July 97

USA Today

Check out this lengthly feature story on JT from USA Today.

“CBS This Morning”

Look for JT to put in another appearance on “CBS This Morning” this Wednesday, July 23. The show starts at 7 a.m. Eastern.

16 July 97

Livestock ’95 Souvenir

Peter Basler sent along word that the Vineyard Gazettenewspaper is still dutifully mailing out copies of the 16-page special insert they published after the Livestock ’95 JT/Carly reunion concert on Martha’s Vineyard. It includes lots of coverage of the concert, plus some great photos from the show and some classic shots of JT and Carly in their youth on the island. For a copy, send $3.00 to:

More Carly, More Ben

All you rabid Ben Taylor fans will be happy to hear he’s heavily involved in Carly’s new project, “Film Noir.” It’s an album of songs from classic films and features Ben singing duets with his mother. John Travolta also shows up on a duet of “Two Sleepy People.” The album is due out September 16 and will be followed by a “making of” show to air on American Movie Classics. For sound clips (one including Ben and one including Travolta) and more information see Arista’s Carly site.

Taylors On Vinyl

For those of you who collect vinyl, TimeWarp lists original vinyl versions of Alex Taylor’s “Dinnertime,” several Livingston albums, and three copies of the Euphoria release of the Flying Machine album. You can also try VinylVendors or Thoughtscape Sounds. I can’t vouch for these companies, but I thought some of you might be interested.

More Chat

Several people have asked me to add more scheduled times to C H A T, so I’ve added Saturdays at 3 p.m. Eastern / Noon Pacific. This is in addition to Mondays at 10 Eastern / 7 Pacific and any other time people manage to meet up there. If you need help getting the Java chat program to work let me know. Most people who’ve had trouble are still using old browsers (usually AOL) and only need to upgrade to a recent version of Netscape or Internet Explorer.

“No Nukes” Laserdisc

I’ve added a pointer to a Japanese import laserdisc version of the “No Nukes” video on the S H O P page. Don’t confuse this with the soon-to-be-released 2-CD version of the soundtrack.

New Lyrics

The amply-named Paulo Fernando Neves Rodrigues has sent me scads of new lyrics for the T E X T page. Thanks, Paulo.

“VH1 Storytellers”

VH1 is airing a 1-hour show about JT called “Storytellers” on June 1 (likely to be repeated later). I’ll post air times when they’re available.

“Hourglass” News

Also, here are some more tidbits about “Hourglass” as gleaned from the

Billboard story and other sources by Paul Mylod:

  • Columbia is promoting the album heavily. As part of the promotion JT will be doing appearances on “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” (as reported earlier), “The Today Show,” “The Tonight Show,” and “CBS This Morning.”
  • A version of “Little More Time With You” taken from the “Storytellers”episode will go into rotation as a video on VH1.
  • Performers on the album include Jimmy Johnson (bassist), Carlos Vega (percussion), and Clifford Carter (keyboardist). Frank Fillipetti produced and Jill Dell’Abate was the associate producer.
  • Basic tracks were recorded near JT’s Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts home in May 1996. Final work was done in October, then the guest artists (Sting, Stevie Wonder, Yo-Yo Ma, et al) were added in New York and L.A. studios after that.

Finally, I’ve put the complete text of the new Billboard cover story on the T E X T page. Thanks to Mark Morris.

  • 29 Apr 97 – They’ve updated one show (Long Island University), but still no dates in the West. See the M A I Npage.
  • 27 Apr 97 – Even more JT on TV: Look for JT to appear on Monday’s episodes of both “Regis and Cathy Lee” and “The Rosie O’Donnell Show.” Air times vary, so as they say, check your local listings.

  • 24 Apr 97 – There’s more JT on VH1 in the coming weeks. Two half-hour shows about the rainforest benefit concerts both feature JT. The first, called “Carnival,” is a behind the scenes look at the recording of an album of songs important to the artists’ childhoods. The other is called “Sting and Friends” and has highlights of the concert. JT appears in both shows. The shows air back to back on April 30th at 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific and May3 at 10 p.m. Eastern/Pacific. Thanks to Paul Mylod for the news.
  • 23 Apr 97 – A JT appearance on an old “Saturday Night Live” episode (Steve Martin hosted) will air this Friday the 25th on Comedy Central at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Eastern/Pacific. If you’d like to be notified about JT news, tour info, and changes to this web site, just send an email to list@james-taylor.com Also, I now have the lyrics to JT’s new song “Another Day” on the T E X T page thanks to Robert Casas, who transcribed it from the VH1 Honors performance.

  • 27 Mar 97 – www.james-taylor.com is officially working again. This is not another change of address for the site — just an additional way to get here.
  • 26 Mar 97 – Sony has announced that the new album, titled “Hourglass,” will be released May 13. I’ll post more info when I have it. Visit Sony’s new JT page for a cool clip of “Spend a Little More Time With You” and a photo. You’ll need Shockwave to see it.
  • 25 Mar 97 – Added a great close-up of JT playing at a 1994 Great Woods, Massachusetts show courtesy of Jeff Topping. See the G A L L E R Y page.
  • 21 Mar 97 – JT alumni update courtesy of Leo Strine and William Breen: Danny Kortchmar produced the new Freedy Johnston CD and supposedly has an album of his own coming out with a group called Slo Leak. Arnold McCuller performed on Phil Collins’ most recent album and Kate Markowitz is touring as a backup singer for Shawn Colvin.
  • 19 Mar 97 – It looks like I’ll be able to buy the james-taylor.com domain in the next few days. The current address will continue to work (I realize what a pain it is when a site keeps changing its address), but in addition you’ll be able to get here from www.james-taylor.com as you could before.
  • 13 Mar 97 – I added a S H O P section that links directly to JT’s albums at CDnow. They don’t carry boots, but they’re a well-established music mail-order company that carries all JT’s regular albums along with some videos and imports. Let me know if you order anything and especially if you have good or bad experiences with them.
  • 13 Mar 97 – I removed the link to Tunnel Records since I have serious doubts about the company. They bill your card before they even have your order in stock (a very questionable business practice for a mail-order company) and they’re very difficult to reach on the phone. I’d had an order placed for more than six months that was billed but never shipped. I finally had to email and ask them to cancel it since I couldn’t reach them by phone. I haven’t dealt with CDBanzai, so if you have any experiences with them please let me know.
  • 12 Mar 97 – Happy Birthday, JT. Fixed missing second verse of “Something In the Way She Moves” thanks to Chris Meadows. Also, be sure to check out the two new rare JT recordings on John Hurlbut’s site. See the MAIN page for a link.
  • 10 Mar 97 – The new album will be out at the end of May, I’m told. The summer tour begins in early June. See the M A I N page for the dates.
  • 9 Mar 97 – After nearly three months of sporadic downtime, JT Online has returned. There’s much to add, but for now I have the tour dates linked from the MAIN page. I apologize for all the problems, but now we should be back for good. Enjoy.
  • 17 Dec 96 – I added the chords for “My Romance” to the T E X T page.
  • 2 Dec 96 – I have unconfirmed news that studio work for JT’s new album is complete. I expect it will be several months before release, though.
  • 15 Nov 96 – I’ve added a slew of new MIDI files to the S O U N D S page.
  • 12 Nov 96 – Sadly, JT’s father died on Sunday. From the November 5 Boston Globe: “Dr. Isaac M. Taylor of Boston, former dean of the University of North Carolina Medical School, died Sunday at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was 75.”Also, I apologize for all the recent problems with this site. Apparently our host site has now ironed out its server problems. Look for lots of backlogged additions in the coming days, including several new MIDI files. Also, don’t forget about the Monday night chats (10 p.m. Eastern time). See the C H A T page for details.
  • 9 Oct 96 – My “James Taylor and the Original Flying Machine” CD arrived in the mail last week (Gadfly Records – 219) and I wanted to post my first impressions for those who might be thinking about buying it. See the FAQ for more information about the history of this album and the events following its 1967 recording. The Packaging:They wisely used the design from the white pencil-sketched version of thevinyl album. Owners of the original vinyl will recognize it immediately.

Producer Chip Taylor’s liner notes are pretty lengthy, but there’s not much

other than the text. Sorry, no long-lost photos of JT and crew in the

    studio.

    The Remixes:

Owners of the vinyl recordings will be surprised when they hear the first

two tracks — rerecordings of Night Owl and Knocking Round the Zoo.

Unfortunately, I expect it won’t be a pleasant surprise. Imagine laying

a heavy drum machine track and a bass line on top of 30-year old recordings

and you’ll have a good idea of the result. Thankfully, they’ve included the

original versions of both songs, too.

    The Original Recordings:

I’d hoped that the sound quality would be a big leap over all the vinyl

versions in circulation, but unfortunately it’s not much of an improvement.

No scratchiness is heard, but I suppose there’s not much you can do about

the not-quite-professional sound quality of the original recordings. The

muddiness of the vinyl albums is still around on the CD version. With the

two new tracks, the total comes to 10 (including the false starts on

“Brighten Your Night With My Day” and “Knocking.”

I expect many of you will still be glad to own it, of course. I certainly

am. It’s available via all the online stores, retail stores, or direct from

    Gadfly (802) 865-2406.

    The track list:

    1. Night Owl (new version) 3:44
    2. Knocking ‘Round the Zoo (new version) 3:32
    3. Rainy Day Man 3:07
    4. Brighten Your Night With My Day (intro) 1:01
    5. Brighten Your Night With My Day 2:34
    6. Kootch’s Song 3:13
    7. Something’s Wrong (instrumental) 3:04
    8. Night Owl (original version) 2:28
    9. Knocking ‘Round the Zoo (original version intro) :55
    10. Knocking ‘Round the Zoo (original version) 3:03
  • 29 Sep 96 – I just added four photos from JT’s recent show in Concord, CA. Thanks to Mark Morris for the great shots. See the IMAGES page. I also forgot to mention several new MIDI files on the SOUNDS page.
  • 27 Sep 96 – Just got back from a wonderful Liv Taylor show at the Passim in Cambridge. It was nice to finally meet the Taylors, and of course the performance was great fun. I got a couple decent photos during the sound check — one of Liv playing guitar and another of him looking pensive. Do go see his show if you get a chance.
  • 26 Sep 96 – By now you’ve noticed that we’ve officially moved into our swank new space at www.james-taylor.com. If you have any problems with the new site be sure to let me know.
  • 25 Sep 96 – Though still in the testing stage, a new home for JT Online is ready for its first tentative steps toward replacing this one. Give it a try and let me know if you have any problems. You should find everything about the site snappier — especially sound and picture downloads since they’re not transferred by FTP anymore.
  • 5 Sep 96 – Gadfly records is releasing the classic “James Taylor and the Original Flying Machine” album on CD — finally. It’s set for release on October 1 and should be available via all the larger online stores. Check the M A I N page for links to several stores that will carry it.
  • 17 Aug 96 – I added a short clip of JT singing Joni Mitchell’s “For Free” on the S O U N D S page.
  • 16 Aug 96 – The airing of “Two Lane Blacktop” and “Archives” (featuring JT) will happen multiple times starting tonight. Check VH1’s schedule for details.
